How to Install a SoLuna Copper Farmhouse Sink

Soluna Copper Farmhouse Sink Installation

Installing a SoLuna copper farmhouse sink can be a rewarding DIY project, but it requires careful planning and attention to detail. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Tools & Materials Needed:

  • Copper farmhouse sink
  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Silicone adhesive or plumber's putty
  • Sink clips or brackets (if needed)
  • Pipe wrench or adjustable wrench
  • Plumbing supplies (drain kit, P-trap, etc.)
  • Level
  • Wood shims (if necessary)
  • Safety gear (gloves, goggles)

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Prepare the Countertop Cutout
    • Measure the sink dimensions: Measure the width, depth, and height of the copper farmhouse sink. Make sure your cabinet or countertop is suitable for the sink. Typically, the countertop will overhang the interior of the sink by about 1/8 inch. The “shoulders” at the front sides of the sink go in between the cabinets. The sink can protrude approximately 2 1/2 inches at the front.
    • Mark the cutout: On your countertop, trace the sink's dimensions, leaving enough room for the sink to sit snugly inside. A copper farmhouse sink usually has a front apron that extends beyond the countertop edge.
    • Cut the countertop: Use a jigsaw to cut the opening in your countertop to fit the sink. For some materials like granite or quartz, you may need professional tools or help to make precise cuts.
  • Support the Sink
    • Install support brackets: A farmhouse sink is heavy, so it needs support beneath the countertop. Install support brackets or a platform inside the sink cabinet to hold the sink's weight. We recommend mounting a 2"x4" cleat to the sides and back of the cabinet for the sink to sit on. This should be placed so that when the sink is positioned on it the top rim lays perfectly flush with the walls of the cabinet. The countertop will lay over the top of the sink.
    • Before placing the sink on the cleats: Check to make sure the top rim of the sink is perfectly flat. If necessary, turn the sink over on a flat, clean surface, such as the floor. If any part of the rim lifts away from the floor, gently tap it down until it meets the floor. The proper tool for this is a rubber or wooden mallet. If neither is available you can use a standard hammer but lay a folded washcloth or several layers of a rag on the metal to buffer the force of the hammer. Tap very gently. It shouldn’t take much to move the metal.
    • Test-fit the sink: Place the copper sink into the cutout to ensure it fits properly. Adjust the countertop or cabinet if necessary.
  • Install the Sink
    • Apply adhesive or putty: Before setting the sink permanently, apply a bead of silicone adhesive or plumber’s putty around the edges of the sink that will contact the countertop.
    • Position the sink: Carefully lower the sink into place. Press it down evenly to ensure the adhesive bonds properly. Use a level to make sure the sink is sitting flat.
    • Secure the sink: If your sink has clips or mounting brackets, secure them to hold the sink in place. Tighten any screws to fasten the sink securely to the countertop.
  • Connect the Plumbing
    • Attach the drain: Install the drain assembly at the bottom of the sink using a drain kit. Apply plumber's putty around the drain flange before tightening the drain body to ensure a watertight seal.
    • Connect the P-trap and drainpipes: Use a pipe wrench or adjustable wrench to connect the P-trap and other drainpipes. Make sure all connections are tight and free of leaks.
    • Install the faucet: If your sink includes a faucet or fixtures, install them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure all fittings are tight and watertight.
  • Test for Leaks
    • Check the installation: Turn on the water to the faucet and fill the sink. Then, drain the water while checking all plumbing connections for any leaks. Tighten connections as necessary.
  • Finishing Touches
    • Clean up excess adhesive: Wipe away any excess silicone adhesive or putty around the edges of the sink.
    • Wax Sink: You can wax your copper sink periodically to help delay tarnishing and oxidation.  We recommend "Renaissance Wax" or "Howard Wax-It-All".

Tips for a Successful Installation:

  • Work with a helper:
    • Copper farmhouse sinks are heavy, so it’s helpful to have someone assist you during the installation.
  • Use wood shims:
    • If the sink is uneven or doesn’t sit perfectly in the opening, use wood shims underneath to adjust the height and keep the sink level.
  • Seal properly:
    • Copper sinks may tarnish over time, but proper sealing and maintenance can preserve their beauty.
